Ten Songs You Might Not Know Are Covers: Obsession (#8)

As I continue my countdown of songs that you might not know are covers I suppose I should point out this is an "age" thing. Most of the songs I'm using are songs that are from "my generation" (no, not that Who song
). There are countless other examples out there. For instance, I didn't know that some hair band had actually done a cover of "Your Mama Don't Dance" by Loggins and Messina! I'll admit up front I'm most likely missing a few (hundred) songs. With that in mind, here's my next song.
#8: Obsession
This shocked me to discover it was a cover! One of the greatest songs of the new wave-techno era of the early 80s in my opinion, this was the first (and biggest) hit by the L.A. synth band Anamotion. (Yes, they're Americans, despite the way they sound [I guess everyone wanted to be the Human League in the wake of the Human League's success with "Don't You Want Me" back then].). "Obsession" became an obsession of sorts, hitting the Billboard top ten in 1984.
And it's a cover! A year before Anamotion's big hit, Holly Knight and Michael Des Barres -- the latter famously known as being the one-time husband of super-groupie Pamela Des Barres (if you insist on reading her sleaze book I'm With the Band get a shot first) -- wrote and recorded the song, which appeared in the film A Night in Heaven.
Most people probably don't realize the Anamotion song was a cover because the movie that featured the original was a major flop. At least a good song came out of it.

Here's the original version, which is really creepy in comparison to the famous cover (thanks to Des Barres reciting the lyrics instead of singing them):

This is among my favorite all time songs. Animotion was a rare US synthpop band. Cynthia Rhodes replaced Astrid Plane later on.

Yeah, I'mma need to get my Flashplayer back so I can verify if I've heard this song or not. Got any more of this Top 10? Because after "Cruel To Be Kind,"(Which I know wasn't on this list) I'm curious if there are any other songs from my youth that I didn't know were covers.

Yes, I have seven more to do. I'm posting one per day. I think the one I listed at #1 is pretty surprising...I mean, it surprised me when I read it was a cover!

@FourWalls I see, and you've already read my reaction to Black Magic Woman being a cover... Good lord... It's akin to when I learned Iron Maiden's "I've Got The Fire" was a cover. What had happened was I had heard a cover used as background music in DC's Legends Of Tomorrow and didn't recognize vocalist as Iron Maiden's first vocalist Paul Di'Anno or their second and current vocalist, Bruce Dickson. So in looking to see who else did a cover, I learned that the original song was done by a band called "Montrose."
Iron Maiden's cover link:
The original by Montrose link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccQRJJoW7TY
Though in double checking my facts, I just learned that there was a cover of the song prior to Iron Maiden's cover by a band called "Axe." And I'mma see if that's the cover I'm looking for when I get my Flashplayer back.
I've got the Fire off of the Best of the B-sides Album(disk 1) by Iron Maiden Great live cover. They were all great Montrose fans at the time - a classic B-s...

@Hanyouyomi - it's not on my top ten list but Quiet Riot's "Come on Feel the Noize" was a cover of a Slade song.

And then Des Barres went on to replace Robert Palmer in the Power Station, then star in the remake of WKRP in Cincinnati!
Seriously, this is one of those nuggets of information I've forgotten.
