This late aftenoon, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) before the Lower and Higher Houses of Congress. He stressed the need to eradicate illegal drugs which wreaks havoc in the lives of even the poor Filipinos; he stressed the need to remove bureaucratic red tape, improve government services specially to the poor; provide employment; treat overseas Filipino workers as real heroes by speeding up their application papers; etc. which are all aimed at helping the poor and marginalized sectors of society. This is the first time that we heard a different style of SONA, and even the progressive sectors of society, the leftists, are in full support of his programs. He is a down-to-earth leader.

Seemed he did not mention extreme graft and corruption! Ending graft and corruption should be No. 1 priority. Mayors and governors are millionaires because they pocket 90% of people's money . . and they spend them to build mansions, to buy expensive cars, and to gamble like cockfighting. These corrupt mayors and politicians have also the right to remain silent - FOREVER!

He just touched on it partially, but said he will go against them also. Hope he will do all his pronouncements, but of course, those in the lower branches of the government should also do their part so that people's money should go where it should go.

Yesterday was really a significant day for all of us Filipinos. We could see the start of the change for the better. A different Sona and everything that happened. I just hope it will continue for a lifetime.

I have not seen the SONA but have seen the good news about it. I heard it was the first time the police got lunch pack meals and that the protesters were not protesting instead listened and supported what the Pres. said on his speech. The President was indeed thinking about everything. I hope God will help him fulfill his good plans for the welfare of the poor and the common people.

We hope so, it lies on the Labor Secretary if the private employees will ask for it. At least the income tax will be reduced.

Well, there' s a lot more to go. Though i hope next time they won't promise a so called 30 minute speech when it's actually two hours but I love the optimism and he is clearly telling people what to do in his cabinet.
