The Third Reich

I watched the documentary today of the Third Reich. I thought I had heard everything to be said about the atrocities committed at Hitlers command. It was almost beyond imagination. Germans who lived near the crematories and concentration camps saying they did not know what was happening. They could not turn their heads away when the allies came in. German citizens were made to look at the huge piles of bodies who were starved or tortured to death. Then dig graves and bury the bodies. Surely we would never let anything like that happen here. I hope we would rise up and fight to the death to prevent such a catastrophe.

I have been reminded often lately of that evil chapter in history and the rise of an egotistical "strong man" who led his country to ruin.

So have I. the person you refer to could be another Hitler in the making. People cannot see him for what he is. I think Hitler had the same effect on the Germans..

You have him figured out. There seems to be a rise around the world in personality cult types, with Putin, Erdogan in Turkey, our own wannabe and some growing fringe parties in France and eastern Europe. These are dangerous people.

@JamesHxstatic The scary part is that people cannot see beyond the facade. It's like they are being hypnotized.

People of the free world will fight together as allies to prevent things like these from happening, be it in the West or in Asia.

@RubyHawk like cancer it has to be stopped at an early stage, this would not have happened if the allies took action right after Germany overrun and annexed Poland, but everybody was reluctant doing their everyday business.

It's heartbreaking, I don't want to send our young women and men off to be killed fighting, but what is the alternative ?

It really was a horrendous thing and I can't even imagine how the poor people who lived through it handled it.

@simone10 It's terribly sad, my better half's grandparents, uncles and aunts were involved. the grandparents were made to dig their own graves and then they were shot and tossed in the grave with hundreds of other Jews..

Most of the Jews never came home, with all the crematories, gassing and killings.

I am afraid that we would be no more willing to put our own lives on the line for our neighbors now than German citizens were then. It is not an easy thing to do.

@norcal I can understand why citizens acted as they did, but many more did everything they could to help the Jews. if everyone had done the same the outcome might have been different.

Many people still deny it, even with all the pictures that were made and documented at the time. In this documentary they had the pictures that were made when the allies came in.

Its funny how even today with all the proof we have people adamantly deny that such a thing ever happened. Unimaginable is the word.

@RubyHawk True .. we need to keep those memories alive so the world will not have to suffer Hitlers and something like that again.

We have the proof with pictures and testimonies of those who were there. But still some say it didn't happen. I would like all our school kids to have to read the truth, many of them hardly know a thing about it.

And most realize, there are still some out there saying NONE OF THIS HAPPENED! The churches and governments knew more than they admitted from what we were told.
