To some, such as farmers and forest fire-fighters, rain is needed and most welcome. Sometimes, rain is a happy, celebratory occasion, while for others, rain is dark and gloomy. We're going with dark and gloomy for #7 in my Favorite Songs about Rain series (which I've borrowed from @JohnRoberts,) with "Prayers for Rain" by The Cure. Led by vocalist/guitarist Robert Smith (the group's only constant,) The Cure formed in England in 1976, and are still going strong. In 1989, the band released what is widely considered their masterpiece (or their defining album, if you prefer,) Disintegration. The record itself is a doom and gloom affair (just try to listen to it in it's entirety and not come away feeling totally hopeless.) "Prayers for Rain," located in the middle of the record, is particularly gloomy and doomy and dark and depressing, just as rain is for lots of people. It wasn't a hit, as it wasn't released as a single, but it is an integral tune on what is a very depressing album. I love it! (Information verified by Wikipedia.)

What can one say about The Cure? If there were a top 10 of the most important and popular new wave/punk/alternative/synthpop bands, The Cure makes the cut.

An argument could even be made for #1.

@teamfreak16 Not #1. You would have to think Talking Heads, Ramones, Blondie or Depeche Mode as ahead. But what a hell of a list!

@JohnRoberts - Yes, but, The Cure has the longevity and a wildly diverse catalogue. Like I said, an argument could at least be made. Of course, you could make the exact same argument for the Banshees. Or Blondie. Or Depeche Mode. Or...
