A Potential Cure for a Hideous Disease

There are so many types of dementia, caused by so many different reasons (Parkinson's, strokes, genetics..). Alzheimer's Disease is the type of dementia most people are familiar with even though there are many more.
A lot of you know my mother was diagnosed with dementia at age 46, and she died of it at age 55, which was over a year ago. I can't even begin to describe the horror of her decline. She eventually forgot how to chew or swallow. Yes, FORGOT.
So when I recently read an article about a vaccine for dementia I was filled with hope. It's too late for my mom, but it might not be too late for others, or for me if I follow in my mom's health footsteps. Not only could it prevent dementia, but it might reverse dementia in people who have already been diagnosed with it.
This study should be approved, hopefully, to be used in clinical trials within three years. It's shame these things can't be fast tracked, but I'll take any progress.
Of course there are some who will go on about the danger of vaccines (it's not like this is a vaccine for children), and you are entitled to your beliefs. I won't try to dissuade you. But I'M excited because it offers hope to millions of people, and I, along with many other mylotters, are some of those people.

This [ii]is[i] great news. My mom too has dementia. I thought until this year it was Alzheimer's but my sister said it was just dementia. I'm sure they really don't know.
I never heard of people forgetting how to chew or swallow. I think I read something about a possible vaccine for some other illness too. I was thinking cancer, but that was a different study I read about in my doctors office. I don't remember what the vaccine I heard about was related to, but any news in the medical field is good especially when it doesn't mean you have to take a specific pill the rest of your life.
Sorry to hear that your mom got it so young and didn't last very long with it. That must be very difficult for you.

I didn't know it was possible for a human to lose their mind the way she did. My grandfather had dementia that was more common, like forgetting things ten seconds after hearing them. But my mom was just unbelievable. She'd look at a wide open door and get angry because to her, the door was closed. How a person's brain turns on them like that is shocking.

@AmbiePam I wonder whether she had a combination of dementia and one of the related illnesses for her mind to not comprehend those simple things. Could it be that her sight wasn't all there either? My mom is legally blind, so things like that won't affect here although she can see certain things when she wants to.

You have to consider that results for testing won't happen overnight. They can start tests tomorrow but won't know if a person DOESN'T get dementia until they're well into their senior years. My mother didn't get dementia until she was in her 80's.
I DO hope this is the real thing. I've seen so many so-called cures for fibromyalgia that have really meant nothing at all.

I know all that. But it's way more positive than no possible vaccine at all. And it can't possibly cure all or prevent dementia, of course.
I have a cousin in a clinical trial, and she's had no good results. But hopefully, it will eventually start to work before she goes blind. She'll be in her fifth year in the trial.

I have the beginning stages of dementia, but they think mine is due to years of oxygen loss. I have started back on my CPAP machine and I'm sleeping better.
