Ken Rosenthal reports the news on Tuesday the San Diego Padres have traded outfielder Melvin Upton Junior to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for their minor league pitcher Hansel Rodriguez.
The Blue Jays who are the defending American League East Division champions are currently in third place in the American League East Division standings.
The Padres who are currently in fourth place in the National League West Division standings have decided to acquire Rodriguez who is currently pitching in the Rookie League with the Blue Jays to be part of their rebuilding team process.
The Blue Jays needed the services of Upton as an insurance policy during the remainder of the current baseball season.
The Padres will be paying the remainder of the $22 million dollar contract they owe Upton on his contract that expires at the end of the 2017 baseball season which is why they decided to trade away one of the best players to the Blue Jays in exchange for the 19 year right handed pitcher on Tuesday.

The Jays will have the services of Upton for several seasons. Right now, he's the 4th outfielder and insurance.
