The last of the Millennium Octet also known as Galaxies Like Grains Of Sand written by Aldiss in the 1950’s.
As the universe itself begins to disintegrate a space voyager running low on oxygen makes a desperate effort to land on a planet hoping to find air there. He dies, but a mysterious humanoid alien takes his ship and uses it to travel the cosmos gathering together a vast mercenary army to use in order to get an audience with and tell another alien warlord of the impending end of everything that exists, but the atomic weapons used in the battles to follow actually speed up the end.
It is never explained why the alien needs to tell a people what no one can prevent anyway.

A robot in the throes of major depression would've spiced this story right up.

@JohnRoberts quite an apt description - other stories in the sequence which is stretched over thousands of years are better
