Bradford Doolittle reports the news on Friday the Chicago Cubs have activated from the 15 day disabled list outfielder Chris Coghlan. Coghlan had been on the 15 day disabled list since July 3 with soreness in his right rib cage. To make room for Coghlan on the Cubs 25 man active roster, the Cubs demoted infielder Tommy La Stella to the Iowa Cubs which is the AAA minor league team of the parent team. Cubs manager Joe Maddon will start Coghlan on his left field position on Friday when the Cubs host the Seattle Mariners for a weekend series at Wrigley Field. Coghlan has a batting average of .155 during the current baseball season which means he will be playing in a reserve role with the Cubs since they have a huge talent base of outfielders on their current roster. Maddon admitted that making the decision to demote La Stella was made due to the fact that La Stella has one option left to return to the minor leagues this year while Coghlan has run out of options to return to the minor leagues. Coghlan had been on a rehabilitation assignment with the Tennessee Smokies when he was promoted to the Cubs lineup this week.
