Sports Illustrated reports on their website on Sunday the Kansas City Royals have placed their right handed relief pitcher Wade Davis on the 15 day disabled list with a strain of his right flexor muscle. Davis time on the 15 day disabled list is retroactive to July 27, 2016. The Royals will have set up relief pitcher Kelvin Herrera as their closer for the time being. Davis had been activated from the 15 day disabled list on July 16 after he recovered from a strain of his right forearm that sent him to the disabled list on July 5th. The Royals who are the defending World Series champions are currently in fourth place in the American League Central Division 12 games behind the Cleveland Indians for first place in the division. The Royals have called up left handed relief pitcher Matt Strahm from their AA minor league team the Northwest Arkansas Naturals to replace Davis on their 25 man active roster. The Royals management is hoping that Davis does not have a serious injury to his right forearm that could require surgery that could keep him on the shelf for the remainder of the current baseball season.

I suspect KC may be done this season. They can't even trade Davis now.

You are correct if they are not able to trade their closer due to an injury.
