I have gone several times to Aruba where I have my timeshare, so I know my way around. As St. Maarten is a lot smaller, I thought we would not have much problems. I was wrong.
Taxis are VERY expensive there. And they charge for the amount they drive and also for the amount of people. And as we had to take the children with us, before we discovered what to do, we had to pay to learn.
The first day we had to go to the supermarket. The super was not very near and as the driver counted noses (even Sofía´s small one), we had to pay $100 to go and return there. The whole cart full meant arount $300 and that included salmon, meat, shampoos, you name it. So the real pain was the cab.
There were 2 things to do in the future. Either stay at the pool the 2 weeks or find a less expensive way to travel.
We went once to Phillisburg by bus, but buses did not go to many places.
It was then that we saw light. We had to RENT a car. So we did.
We went to places that we could not even have gone on a taxi. Unless of course, we paid for the cab to wait for us.
Car rentals are not expensive in places where there is tourism. That way we took the children to a mini zoo and to a pint size butterfly farm.
Beaches were not awesome as Eagle Beach in Aruba, so we stayed by the pool many days.

I have not had many problems traveling. But of course, traveling with 2 small children is quite different.

Glad you were able to figure that out. Transportation costs have become a huge part of anything we try to do.

I think that we learned many things from this trip, all about traveling with children.

I know! We did it only once and it was because we had to give the children something to eat. After the handed back the rented cab, it was cheaper to buy at the minimarket nearby.

It pays to be a financially savvy traveler.
Who says you have to break the bank when you are on vacation?

Aruba is a more friendly island because it is bgger so there is better transportation. I went once to St. Maarten with a friend, but it is different to go with children.
