Al Yellon reports the news on Tuesday the Chicago Cubs have demoted right handed relief pitcher Spencer Patton to their AAA minor league team the Iowa Cubs. Former Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim right handed relief pitcher Joe Smith will replace Patton on the Cubs 25 man active roster. Smith was traded by the Angels to the Cubs on Monday in exchange for minor league pitcher Jesus Castillo. Cubs manager Joe Maddon reported the news on Tuesday in an interview with a Chicago sports radio talk show. The Cubs will be hosting the Miami Marlins in the second of a three game series at Wrigley Field in Chicago Illinois. Maddon has decided that Smith is better suited to work on his relief pitching team than Patton at this time of the current baseball season.

Even though Smith was not all that effective for the Angels, he the ideal veteran to bolster the Cub bullpen as they go all out for the World Series.

The Cubs need all the help they need in the relief pitching department.

That's tough to be demoted. I hope the new relief pitcher works for them. Or not - I'm not a Cubs fan. They are the one team next to the Brewers that I really dislike. So if the new guy helps them stay out of the series - so much the better. Sorry - just telling it like it is with me.
