Astronomical Electric Bill, Argh!!!!

August 3, 2016 10:08am CST
wow, I just opened my newest electric bill and it is the highest it has ever been. I had heard that rates had nearly doubled. How can they get away with that? I mean, really!!! My bill is always high this time of year due to running the air conditioner. Normally, it's in the $250-275 range, but this was nearly $400.... For one month and I live in a very small house. Wow. I'm already on an extremely tight budget. Not sure how I'll manage this one. And it arrived just in time when I'm trying to buy school books, supplies, and uniforms.

WOW that is high. Have you called to see if you can maybe make some kind of payment arrangement with them?

I hadn't heard that, though our electric company did make some sort of quiet announcement

Wow that's a high bill. Well, did you run the a/c during peak hours?

@infatuatedbby yeah, but i always run my a/c during peak hours. it was announced that they were raising their rates a significant amount for the entire area. it was just the first time it hit my bill and wow, painful.

That is really high! Every July first our rate increases with the new financial year but at least it won't be nearly doubled...

I hope I do not get a bill that high I am not sure how we would pay it either. that is way to high.

yes, i'm just seriously taken aback by this. i know we use a lot of electricity in a household with kids who forget & leave lights on and running the a/c, but the huge increase is unlike any i have experienced in living in this house for 14 years.

That is astronomical! I presume they blame it on the cost of generating and buying power from other utilities.

@jillybean1222 that is awfully expensive. This country has big financial problems and people are always strapped for money. Finally they listened to the people. Now we send the electric company our latest reading and they figure out much electricity we use up on the average and give us one price to pay each month. It works quite well.

We have a 2,300 sq. ft total electric home, A/C has been on 24/7 since May and we run a pool filter - our most recent bill was only $207. Have you contacted them? We have cheap electric through the TVA

That does seem an awful lot - I wouldn't expect to pay that for three months.

mercy! i thought mine 'twas high, but that $240 sounds much better now. 'course, we'd triple digit heat fer most'f the month with no rains, so water (i've a well) was essential fer the horses, the garden'n the trees. if'n ya live'n a small house, ya need to see what can be done to insulate't better 'n follow the advice 'f others. make certain yer a/c 'tis clean, change the filter oft (more'n once a month if'n ya got critters...gotta love pet hair!!) 'n see 'bout where ya can caulk, add more insulation, put insulated shades 'p where ya can to block the suns rays. this'll also help with yer heatin' come winter. our's'd not be so high if'n the hubs'd put the new roof ('tis a mobile home, ol' model 'n can't put more insulation'n the roof without doin' such) 'n gettin' the front't the house put back together. he'll not get off his duff 'n do such, jest complain' 'bout the bill. i keep the thermostat 't 78 degrees 'n the a/c's been runnin' nearly non-stop fer o'er a month now....

I am well aware that my electric bill doubles in the summer (the worst part about living in Florida), so I try to plan for it all year long by budgeting appropriately. So in the cooler months when the bill is much lower, I still set aside a higher amount so that the money will be available later in the summer when it's hot, and I can sleep well at night knowing I have enough money to pay the bill.

@jillybean1222 Mine's been higher than normal because we've had a very hot and dry summer here in Florida. Normally, we have afternoon thunderstorms every day that help cool things off a little bit, but without all the daily storms this year, our temperatures have been hitting records, which also causes the a/c to have to work harder!

very smart way to do it. i know ours is always higher, but not usually quite this much.
