Blood Brothers?

Back when I was a kid, before the blood of other people was such a scary thing, there were a lot of Hollywood movies where the heroes, always men, would, in a time of battle or preparing for battle or surviving battle, would slice each others fingers or arms and press them together. The idea was that the blood would mingle and the men, from that time on, would be "brothers." I have a vague recollection of being inspired, at the around the age of 13 to become a "blood brother" with another boy who shared many adventures with me in the drought-stricken 1950s of west Texas. We hunted and fished, and played endless games of Monopoly and poker in the company of of other guys. We lost contact after I moved to California at age 15. Jimmy Ray, his name was, went on to be married, fathered twins, never left that little town in Texas and committed suicide before he was 40. A book I am reading mentioned blood brothers and made me wonder about that silly ritual.

The concept of that is "cool", but yes, no one would ever do that in this day and age. I was fascinated by that way back when too (but never found that blood brother or sister). Jimmy Ray - the perfect name for an adventurous Texan blood brother - oh but sorry to hear he ended his life!

Yes, he had the perfect name for that little town where my dad lived and I visited each summer for several weeks. It is a wonder I lived through those years with the hunting and the snakes and a few fights.

@JamesHxstatic I'm sure it was an amazing time in your youth - what memories you must have! And to think what you would not have experienced if it weren't for that Jimmy Ray!

@much2say We and some other boys ran wild in the pastures and dry gullies or west Texas.

I can remember seeing a movie where a couple of men did this. I never had the desire to do such a thing. Sorry to hear about your childhood friend. It sounds like he had a lot going for him, but I'm sure he didn't feel that way for whatever reason.
