Government entitlement programs opinions.

I'm slightly afraid to post this out of fear that it will cause arguments. I truley just want to get a better understanding of all sides of the situation. If you are here to argue please move along. I am from the US and I am watching the government entitlement programs get bigger and bigger all the time. I feel like eventually the programs are going to run out of other peoples money. I agree 100% that there should be help available but I also think its horribly abused. How do you feel about this? Is there a solution to the problems? Is there even a problem at all? If you have ever been on aid, how do you feel about the levels you recieve?

I agree we should help those truly in need, but it's human nature to take when it's "free." Trouble is, nothing is ever really free. It has to be paid for by the rest of us.

@happythoughts Would you cut all welfare/publice assistance, government subsidized house and food stamps? Would you cut these programs by 75%? 15%? How much of the state budget do these programs make up? How much of the federal budget does these programs do these programs make up? Frankly, I don't know that there's a right or wrong answer. Any answer someone comes up with will have a dozen detractors. My point is that any any statement ought to have thought have thought behind it, thought founded one facts, that's all. I don't know any more than anyone else (and probably a good deal less than many). I just want to ask questions before I decide.

@msiduri I for sure don't have any answers. I just see what appears to me as a growing problem. I don't think I would cut funding to the programs as much as I think id like to see more motivation to not abuse the programs. A few years back I did the math and my little family could bring in more money on assistance than we were making with my hubby at his job. The catch is that my hubby couldn't be employed to get these benefits. This to me is a broken system. I think if some one is able to work but not willing then the aid that is going towards them would be better served by someone who needs it instead of wanting it free. It doesn't seem fair that we are paying into the system so that those who live off it can live better than us. It should be a hand up instead of a hand out. With that said, I have never had a real need to use these sorts of aid. We have struggled to get buy on a tiny budget and lived off top ramen more that I ever want to admit but we survived. When we as workers are getting by on half (or less) the food budget the system is giving out then its unbalanced and unfair. There really isn't one big solution. There are lots of sides to the same question. I would never want a mother to not have the resources to feed her kids, but if they are eating steak soda pop while I'm eating beans and rice I feel frustrated. The problem with these programs is that eventually as they grow we will run out of other peoples money.
