Associated Press reports the news the Toronto Blue Jays have placed outfielder Kevin Pillar on the 15 day disabled list with a sprain of his left thumb on Monday. Pillar injured his left thumb sliding into second base during a baseball game versus the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Pillar will replaced by Melvin Upton Jr. as their center fielder on Monday as they will be hosting the Tampa Bay Rays at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. The Blue Jays have called up outfielder Darrell Ceciliani to replace Pillar on their 25 man roster on Monday. Ceciliani was playing baseball for the Buffalo Bisons which is the AAA minor league branch of the Blue Jays. Ceciliani will be playing in a reserve role for the defending American League East Division champions for the time being until Pillar recovers from his injury.

Losing Pillar hurts the Jays who are in the thick of the playoff race and this is exactly why they traded to get Upton.

Melvin Upton is the insurance policy of the team.
