Racism in America

There are plenty of instances of racial tension in this country, some extremely explosive, but overall, I think we have still come a very long way in a pretty short time. When my husband and I watched the movie The Help, I was just horrified to know that, just a few decades ago, such dehumanizing behavior was quite typical right here in this country--which is supposed to have been founded specifically on freedom. I can't begin to imagine treating another person like most of the white people in the movie treated their employees, who were clearly very decent and kind ladies and gentlemen. It made me feel very sad and disgusted.
But then today while having lunch, I saw an older (50s-ish) white lady warmly greet and hug her black friend (a lady of around the same age; they seemed to be former coworkers). Her very thick Southern accent served to amplify what a remarkable thing this was, considering they were both most certainly born before the Civil Rights Act was signed into law in 1964. Even though slavery was a reality in this country for two hundred years, it inspired me to see how far we have come in just a couple of generations. Things CAN change for the better, because they already have. So let's continue to be loving and open-minded.

Youtube comments is full of racism so I am happy that there are people in the real world who shows there is only 1 race and it is human race. there is a long way before racism will be gone but at least society is improving.

You Tube comments ARE really obnoxious, sometimes. I just assume it's children trying to be bad.

@AliCanary I always go ion a report spree whenever I see racist comments but sadly a single report is not enough to take them down.

@CaptAlbertWhisker - You are still doing the right thing. Others may join you, and then it won't just be a single report!

I am happy to see people who love another person of different race unconditionally . I too , doesn't look at the race to be friend with another person .
We are all children of God , so we should treat each other equally no matter what the race or status in life is .

I am white and my husband is Asian (Japanese), and I am glad to say that his family was as accepting of me as mine was of him.

We think this kind of problems are getting over gradually but not cent % true because there are some people in our society who never give up to finish these problems at all.

Sometimes progress is difficult and slow, but it ends up happening. When everyone was getting upset about gay marriage, it was pointed out that the very same stupid arguments that it was "unnatural" were made about interracial marriage, which was also illegal just a few decades ago. And of course no one thinks it is at all weird these days!

I'm 65 so there was a lot of turbulence around civil rights playing out on our TV screens back then. I can remember thinking as a kid, "you mean they are just NOW integrating?" I mean even as a kid you know when something isn't fair.I lived in California, but the south was something else. I was so effing glad I didn't live there. They had to be dragged kicking and screaming to comply with integration. There will always be people who need someone to look down on, there will always be white supremacists, they're just soulless people no matter how you look at it. Yes there's been progress but I don't think any part of the civil rights act should have been abandoned.

Agreed. I live in North Carolina, and it can be a war zone. Fortunately our obnoxious, racist voter law that was recently passed was struck down by the courts. Now if we can get rid of the stupid "bathroom bill", we'll be back on track!

It is so nice to see people of different colors doing along so well; it is not the color of the skin that matters, but what is in their hearts.

That is the only thing of importance, really. As Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, said, people should be judged "not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character".

@AliCanary Nothing wrong with different, it's just that some people are just too arrogant or ignorant to accept other people's different feature or perception in life.

Yes, we all have the very same needs and desires, hopes and dreams. Why people think others are so different just because they look different or wear different clothing is just crazy to me.

Sure, obviously there are still a lot of problems, but even though it's distressing to see it on the news, it's actually very good that it is being publicized. Only then will it be addressed, which is the only way it will ever be fixed.

Thank you! It really is ignorance, because a lot of people who are afraid of other folks simply haven't gotten to know them and realize they are quite nice!

If only people saw the person and not their colour, religion, ethnicity, etc., the world would be a much better and peaceful place.

It's just as well that they are--that way we can address the problem and deal with it more directly, or at least, we will know who they are and avoid them! If people continue keeping mum, the problem just festers.
