What if there is no electricity for a day

I cannot imagine going without electricity for a day. We are so used to the presence of electricity that we take it for granted. We depend on it for almost everything in our lives today. Life would just stop. Fortunately in my country the power electric system is so robust, reliable and secure that there has been no major electrical outage for the last 30 years or so. What if you have no electricity for one day? Do you think you can 'survive'?

I can imagine that in other countries, but not in Singapore. I think you can tolerate better if you do not have electricity when you are in some of our neighboring countries, and you are in a village that is far from the city. However, if that happens in a large city, it will be hard to tolerate.

@scheng1 Yes, I agree. Everything would just stop like this discussion would not be possible if there is no electricity.

@succeednow I think if our whole country goes without electricity for just one day, PAP will not win any more election in the future!

@scheng1 That's a reasonable observation. It just shows how secure and reliable is our power system.

Definitely, I can survive even without electricity. My life doesn't depend on it.

We didnĀ“t have electricity for 3 days here after the 2010 earthquake. In other parts of the country it was worse as the epicentre was not here. I then made a mental picture of the contents of the freezer before I opended it to quickly get a piece of meat out. Fortunatly, I have a gas stove. And I used that insted of the electric heater. I went to bed at the end of the day as I could not read, watch TV or use the laptop. I survived.

Just look at this...On August 12, we'll be having power interruption again (sigh).

@lingayako I believe you when you talk about frequent brownouts. Perhaps what the power authority should do is to send study groups to countries like Singapore or those countries who have managed to set up and maintained a highly reliable power system and to learn from them and to implement the necessary measures. Of course. there must first have a political will to start with.

@succeednow I think that would help. I hope the authorities would do that or boost its new projects on putting up more windmills.

I can still survive without electricity for one, although it is quite hard. We always have brownouts, scheduled or not. If there is a scheduled brownout, I wake up early to finish washing our clothes.

@lingayako If you expect and not take for granted the uninterrupted supply of electricity then it wouldn't be too bad as you are somehow prepared for it. But if you live in a country like mine where power outages is extremely extremely rare (almost non existent if I may add) you would feel terrible without electricity.

@lingayako Well, you could come and live here. The utility tariff is reasonable and most everyone including the poor can manage. But I must warn you that dwelling homes and cars here are the one of the most if not the most expensive in the world!

@succeednow I feel envious for a place like yours. We always have power outages but our country has the most expensive electric bills. Quite disgusting.

Yes. If there was no electricity for a day then I would just do something that doesn't involve electricity like reading a book, go for hike, go swimming, go on a picnic, or play a sport.

@CaseyRoss9966 So you do not mind if you're unable to get on the internet for a day and also no smartphone as you would be unable to charge it without electricity. Some people wold not be able to cope!

@succeednow I don't care if I get on the internet or have my phone. I don't really use my phone anyway. I am not a materialistic person so I don't even care if I have a phone or computer at all. I just have them now for safety reasons and the computer for my school work. I prefer to be outside doing things.

I remember last weekend most parts in my country were with no power for the better part of the day after a technical fault on the supply line. Its hard to go on with no power because we need it for so many purposes other than lighting.

@waflay Oh, which country are you from? Your power authority could learn from us to prevent power outages.

@waflay I don't know much about your country but for major outages the problem usually lies with the power station but for other outages the transmission and distribution system may be at fault.

@succeednow In my Kenya we occasionally experience blackouts and the power company always blames on the power station.

@just4him Good for you. I guess you would take it one day at a time?

We would definitely survive. We will just be bit bored because we are used to having our gadgets and electric appliances for entertainment and for doing our day to day task.
• Singapore

@fcmondez Yes, some people can "die" of boredom and many will get withdrawal symptoms due to inability to use smartphone or computer.

@ilocosboy I admire you. If there was no electricity for one week here I think my country would be in very deep trouble.
