The way an adult handles money may very well be if and how you teach them with it. my 3 oldest seem to know how you must pay bills first, and tighten the belt as they say if you need to save for something you want or even if something essential is needed.
Growing up, those 3 had to learn to get by on not much. We would go grocery shopping and of course they would ask for things and more often then not I would have to say "No we can't afford it." It didn't bother me either if someone heard me say so.
Which embarrassed my oldest daughter as she got older. She still blames me for that, even though I had 3 small children, including her at the time and her dad was lazy, didn't work much and when he did it went for drink. So now that they are grown those 3 know how to handle money.
The 2 youngest know you have to work for it but when they were little, I worked and when I could (even to the point of doing without myself) I gave them almost everything or managed to make their fathers. So, they work, but when they get paid they don't do without. Spend all they got on things they want without regards to things they need, therefor being in debt always and no money for needs sometimes. What do you think?
photo is of my oldest and youngest at 14yrs and I think maybe 2 yrs.

@bunnybon7 You are probably right about it being a generation thing.

i dunno fer certain if'n 'tis how they're raised'r not. mine were all raised the same 'n taught to save 'n budget. to really think 'bout schtuff 'fore they made a purchase, no matter how small. seems such jest stuck with the middle son. though the youngest's now a wife who keeps him'n a tight leash, lol.

I think it depends actually. My sister and I were both raised in the same house and taught the same things all growing up. I love saving money and only spending on bills and what needs we have. My sister is the complete opposite-she is a spender and sometimes does not spend wisely.
Some of it is probably how we are raised but I also think some of it is just who we are as a person.

that is a great idea to do that with him. should last him well to see where money goes. i think that could also be a factor with my kids ways of spending

I think it must have had an effect on them that I did not stress how important to save

When I first got a job I went out to eat all the time. My money dwindled fast. I learned to be frugal like my mother taught us growing up. My sister did not learn it the way I did. She has been in credit card debt and buys things as soon as she gets money.

I am sorry, firstof all, that your daughter´s father had a drinking problem. It touches me deeply now as my eldest granddaughter just broke up with her BF for that reason.
I agree with you that we have to teach our children to use well the money they have.

Maybe they need some reminders from you again on how to spend their money wisely . I guess, they spend without thinking of their needs because they are thinking they can repay their debt anyway because they have a job . But this is not a good attitude .
