Summer Childhood Memories.

I grew up in Louisiana. I remember how hot the days were in the summertime. The cracks in the blacktop road were filled with tar that would bubble up in the heat. We would pop the bubbles with our bare toes, our feet were tough as shoe leather, calloused from walking on the scorching pavement. The subdivision we lived in was on drained swampland, and if you dug down a foot or so, your hole would fill with water. There was a ditch behind our house, my brothers and I would go out there and fish for crawdads by baiting a string with a bit of meat. When you caught one, you could pick him up by his back and be perfectly safe. He’d arch his claws up over his head to try to pinch you, but he could not reach. We would always let them go afterward, we didn’t eat them or anything. The summers seemed so long then, once school was out we felt like we’d never have to go back. By the time school started again in the Fall, we were excited to get back to it.

Did you get to play in the fire hydrants? Fun time. Never had the opportunity to catch crawdads, though.

They didn't open the fire hydrants for us in my neighborhood. We played in the sprinklers.

I bet kids nowadays wouldn't recognize crawdads when they see one. Or if they see one.

I don't think I've ever seen one since I moved to California. I hope the kids back there in Louisiana still catch them.

Are crawdads the same thing as crayfish? This is a really nice memory of what it was like living there. I have never really traveled so its nice to see what it was like for others.

Yes, they are the same thing. I agree with you, we have so many people here with different experiences than our own. What seems common place to them may seem strange and exotic to us. I love to hear about their everyday lives.

I love these sort of posts, hearing about people's childhood. Isn't it odd how it always seemed hot and sunny when we were kids? Perhaps it really was where you were, but it definitely wouldn't have been where I was in England.

Well, it was hot in the summer, but it rained a lot in the winter, and we had very dramatic thunderstorms.

Kids seem to find a way to play, no matter what their situation.

My brothers and I were like wild Indians in those southern woods.

So Louisiana has the humidity as well? Fond memories. Bare feet isn't something a lot of people would partake in but it's so rejuvenating. Have a wonderful weekend.

I guess it was humid, but that's what I was used to. When my mom brought us to California, things were very different. I still didn't like shoes though. I always had a stubbed toe.
