Yay or nay? 2016 Olympics

I've never really had an interest in the Summer Olympics, it's just not my thing. But since it's been the only topic on basic TV channels and we refuse to pay for cable, I've had to follow the U.S. swimming and gymnastics. My concern is this: how much news coverage does the Olympics deserve? What stories are the viewers missing out on because of the #phelpsface? Don't misunderstand me; these are world class athletes that have dedicated their lives to their sport, and I totally respect them for that. But are "sports" more important to stay relevant on than current events?

Because it only happens every four years and is the highest level of competition sought after, the media and many others consider it a big deal.

I don't disagree, it is a big deal! I guess I'm just not competitive, or rather involved enough with those sports to get excited about it. :-/

I don't watch the Olympics on TV. I occasionally hear something on the radio and read about them in the newspaper.

The news is obsessed with Olympics! Plus, my local channels are dedicated to Michael Phelps since he grew up in the area. I'd just like to hear about other topics, other than what an amazing athlete he is. No one is contesting that! Can we just hear about something else over my morning cuppa??

Meh. I don't watch. Partly because we don't own a television. Partly 'cause I just don't care.

Initially I was following Olympics but I got so busy last 3-4 days, now unable to follow anything properly.
