Why some people are afraid of talking t others?

I have seen a person who is highly educated. But, what is the speciality of that man is he never talks to others so easily and move freely with others. I sits calm and will be doing his own work. I saw and observed him. He does not make any useful work. What we do will be repeated by him.
I could not suppress my interest and anxiety to know about him. I went and asked why was he so cool and quiet and does not mingle and talk with others? He replied that he is afraid of talking to others.
Will it be like that?

Not knowing anything about this person, you can only guess. Maybe it's a lack of confidence. Maybe he's been hurt too much by others and feels like keeping to himself. He may have become more shy being asked that question.

Personally, I'm always a bit apprehensive about talking to strangers. I'm not really sure why this is, but I've always been an introvert and talking with people exhausts me, so maybe that's why.
