It's time to salute Elvis. Today, August 16, is the 39th anniversary of the death of "The King of Rock and Roll" at the young age of 42. He died from heart failure brought on by abuse of prescription pills. Some of the songs that are in my top ten countdown of songs about Elvis will deal with that. Here, I'll just salute the man and his music.
#25: It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)
You cannot discuss Elvis Presley without mentioning his gospel music. His only Grammy awards were for his gospel albums. He had a very famous quote about people referring to him as "the King of Rock and Roll:" "I'm not a king. There's only one king, and that's Jesus." A lot of the ultra-conservatives slammed Elvis for his "devil's music" (if you ask me, they were just racist because Elvis was doing R&B the way R&B singers did it, as opposed to Pat Boone doing lame, lifeless white-bread [no pun intended] versions of R&B songs when he covered them in the early 50s), but the man had faith.
Here he sings the great Stuart Hamblen song with tenderness and complete conviction. It's a stunning version.

Hi! I used your tag “Top 25 Elvis Songs” and went through your list but didn't see this song. It's kind of a mellow and somber song but the way Elvis sings it grips my heart. Even though it's a sad song it's one of my faves.

It was one of the last songs removed from the list. Trivia: Mac Davis wrote it.

Glad you placed a gospel number on the list. Elvis recorded many gospel albums which are overlooked and emphasize what a great singer he was.

There will be a couple more. I completely agree with you: it's a central aspect of his career and one that's generally ignored by the masses.

I read a Johnny Cash Rolling Stone interview once. Said he and Elvis and Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis once spent a day at Sun Records just singing gospel tunes. How cool would that have been to have been there! (I think I got the names right. It was awhile ago.)
