My Ten Favorite Walk Songs: Walk of Life (#1)

And another top ten discussion list comes to an end. This one has dealt with songs that have "walk" in the title. As I mentioned earlier, most of the bottom half of the list were rock songs while most of the top half of the list were country songs. Here's the exception. #1: Walk Of Life - Dire Straits Not that Mark Knopfler hasn't done country. He won a vocal Grammy for "Poor Boy Blues" with Chet Atkins (which brings to mind one of my favorite lines from Chet: in his autobiography he said the RCA A&R man asked him if he could sing because they didn't want to sign him for just his guitar playing. "'Sure,' I lied." ) No, Chet wasn't a good singer, but oh yeah, the boy could play. And that's what this song is about. A man in the subway has his guitar case open, playing for tips. It happens all over the place (there are a couple of musicians who frequent the Big Four Bridge here in Louisville, playing for tips), and here Dire Straits immortalized the practice in song.
