Today we have the somewhat exciting operations of what is termed "Heavy Plant" in full swing outside our house. Actually, the machines look more like alien life forms or enormous yellow dinosaurs than large trees or pumpkin vines or other such weighty vegetation. The biggest machine by far is at least 50 feet long and supported by four caterpillar tracks. It has a long neck like a diplodocus which vomits the results of its operations into a truck. When at work, it lowers its belly onto the road surface and planes a couple of inches off it with its horrendous rotating teeth. I am astounded and fascinated by the skill with which one man drives this monster. Not only does he control the four independently swivelling caterpillar tracks but he also has to direct the nose of the beast so that the gritty results of its eating go into the waiting lorry and not anywhere else. I have tried to take photos of the progress of this very complex project of resurfacing the entire High Street but I can never seem to be in the right position to take good, clear shots. The picture here is one from Wikipedia. The whole project involves a great deal of planning (as well as planing!) because, of course, people must be allowed to get in and out of their driveways as much as possible whilst the work is in progress. I have to say that the consideration and politeness of the workmen has always been exemplary and it's only today, when they are laying the final surface, that we are either house-bound or have to park our cars elsewhere!

I would end up feeding it a car, or have it pooping in a yard by accident lol

It would make mincemeat of a car, I have no doubt! What a way to deal with those irritating people who park right outside your house in the street when they have a perfectly good driveway themselves - let them work out how to shovel their own car off their driveway!

Some of these machines are incredible feats of engineering. They absolutely fascinate me!

I feel like a kid watching Bob the Builder! It's not just the machines, it's the way that everything is organised and how all of the people operating them are able to work as a team with only hand signals (it's far too noisy for verbal communication). It's a delight to watch!

If that happens here , it will cause a lot of traffic already . Though constructions like that are sometimes made in the evening .

I think that people would complain a LOT if they decided to do the work at night! It is very noisy and, with houses along both sides of the road, many people would be disturbed. Fortunately, there are several alternative routes for most sections of the street so that traffic can be fairly easily diverted. Local businesses, however, have seen a big drop in takings during the operations, which is not so good!

@owlwings They do the night work in highways where there will be no residents to be disturbed . Rerouting of vehicles is also done during those times , since there are only a few who travels by night already.

I think such a sophisticated caterpillar track is surely a monster and its amazing that there are people out there who are able to master the science of operating such a machine.

It seemed to me more like controlling a ship than driving a vehicle. The operator frequently has to move from one side to the other in order to see whether he's on the marked line and cutting to the right depth.

I hate when work like this is going on our street.

It's inconvenient but is being well managed and will only last for a few days, after which we shall have a brand new street with more space for cycles and a speed restriction of 20mph so that both cyclists and pedestrians should feel safer.

Awww, you know how little boys always want to watch the bin lorry or the combine harvester?! Well, it seems they never grow out of that! You are my proof. :)

That is a monster machine in the land. And to think we are only seeing them in the movies. Lets just hope this an ally of autobots and not of megatron.
