Let's Nail It.

I bought this big toe nail clipper at the mall and, out of curiosity, read what's written at the back. Directions: Cut the nail from the edge to the centre. File nails after trimming to prevent splitting and chipping. Care and Safety Advice: Clean blades after each use and keep the clippers lightly oiled and stored in a cool, dry place. We usually use the short nailcutters for our fingernails and toenails. Even the manicurists here who do home service or work in beauty parlors, salons and spas do the same. I've seen and used a big nailcutter with blades that are straight across once, not curved, and it was awkward to use. Do you use both types at home? What do the nail technicians where you live use on their clients? Are house calls allowed? I know in other countries there are male hairstylists. But what about manicurists? Here they tend to be females. Although I don't trim them with a nail file afterwards, I do wet and brush my fingernails and toenails after cutting them. I didn't know that you have to oil the blades. Do you do that? How often? When nailcutters get dull or chipped, we tend to just buy new ones since even the small neighborhood stores sell them cheaply. It's been often said that toenails should be cut straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. I trim it slightly curved at the edges, just following the natural shape. I've never had ingrown toenails, maybe because I don't get pedicures. I mostly wear closed shoes. But I remember one manager in the past telling me that our big boss showed him his feet where the big toenails were surgically removed because it was a recurrent problem. Do you know a family member, friend, coworker, etc who did the same? What was your worst nail problem? Mine was getting the top half of one of my toenails ripped off. It took a long time since toenails grow much slower than fingernails, but that nail did become whole again. Growing up, it was an unspoken rule that trimming nails was done at home. Now you can see and hear the clipping sounds in public transportation, work stations, food courts, etc. Is life in the 2000s so fast-paced that personal hygiene and grooming in public is now accepted? Would you say something if someone was doing it? Hmm, I ask way too many questions for such a silly, shallow topic, don't I? That's why I like Mylot.

yes, it's better to have a podiatrist handle it, and get a prescription so it heals soon.

Whew, @Hatley, I don't know much about nail clippers . . even what podiatrists do! Are podiatrists and manicurists the same?

Good thing you know you have a silly topic hahaha. Well, you still managed to make it a good post. I don't use big nailcutter because I am happy with my small nailcutter. I hope my comment is not silly too

@Macarrosel I use a heavy-duty nailcutter to trim my nails. That's how tough my nails are. Every cut makes a sound TAK . . and when the cut portion of the nail drops to the floor, it makes another sound BOG!

I grew up just getting them cut at home - no particular anything except to just keep it clean and managed. We had small fingers and toes, so the smaller ones were just fine. I remember my dad had the big one for his toenails. But now I prefer to use the big one for toes too. For the kids, I can just use the small one. None of us ever get them done professionally . . . my parents would never pay for such a service, neither would I. Oil the blades? Nah. My son and I don't get ingrown toe nails, but Hubby and daughter do. They were advised by the doctor to cut their toe nails straight too. I can't think of a worst nail situation. The worst for me would probably be just pulling out that little cuticle skin and bleeding all over the place . I think cutting nails in public is gross - especially when the person is just letting the cuttings fly off wherever. At home, I keep a tissue underneath to keep it all together if I'm not over a trash can. That's why I like myLot too!

@hereandthere Getting nails done is very popular here - but I never do it. Many of these nail salons seem to be run by Asian folks - most are female, but I have seen these places run by males. Oh gosh, sounds like they do quite a thorough job - but I just can't get myself to go. I rarely ever paint my nails at all.

@much2say i was surprised because i thought all you had to do was gently shape them into an oval with a emery board then paint them. i didn't like how darker the nails got after you remove the polish and it takes a while to grow so your bare nails look two-toned. most neighborhoods here are dotted with "beauty parlors."

at first i was painting my own nails, but when i had them done, i was surprised at how they scrape the surface of the nail, how deep they cut on the sides and what they snip and push the cuticles. then the computer became a necessity so i stopped growing my nails.

I didn't know that there is a particular nail cutter for the toenails . I use only one nailcutter for both the fingernails and the toenails. And i didn't know we have to put some oil on the blade . Now , i should be doing that .

reading instructions can be surprising, right? i don't know what oil to use. i guess we tend to think nailcutters are cheap, disposable items since we can buy it anywhere.

@jstory7 Actually, I have my own set of cutting/trimming my nails. I bought them in WalMart. I, myself, manicure/pedicure my nails. People think I am gay; but my wife knows I am not.

In our home, we only have a small nail cutter. Then when I got married, I am shocked that my husband told me that there is a separate for hands and toes. Haha! My elder sister's right toenail was removed also because of non-stop producing of puss :) hehe!

I would hate to see someone cutting their toenails in public - yuk. I never use nail clippers - I just use nail scissors and an emery board.

@hereandthere the one I am thinking of have to pull a sliver out every so often, the rest of the nail is ok, but that piece isnt. said they have done that so long it no longer even hurts to yank the nail sliver out when it grows long enough to be an issue and start ingrowing again

Yikes! I've never had a nail problem. My manicurist always uses the large straight clippers on fingernails and toenails. I have all sizes and types at home. As far as public grooming, that is disgusting! I haven't noticed anyone I know doing that.

there's a woman in my bus (which is 45 min ride to the city) who always do her basic manicure. massage her nails with a lotion then file them, but not cut them with a nail cutter. I don't really mind people doing their personal grooming in public.

It is so unhealthy if they will do it in food courts! Could be yucky! It can be accepted anywhere but not in food areas.
