Its That Time Of Year Again

Canada

The grapes are ripening and the acorns are dropping. It sound like I live in the middle of a war. The bird-bangers that sound like gun shots are used in the wineries and vineyards all around my home. The noise starts at dawn and stops at dusk. The bigger wineries now use re-usable nets that live at the bottom of the vines and in the fall they are brought up over the plants. When its harvest time, they lower the nets to get to the grapes and the nets stay there until next fall. I believe it is an expensive way to do it but very handy. Its also quieter... The small wine businesses can't afford the nets so they use the noise to chase the birds away – not always profitable but the noise is just noise and free with a bit of electricity. Since I live on a ravine, I have a beautiful back yard with a gorgeous forest and deep ravine with a stream running through it. There are at least a thousand squirrels living back there (I've never counted them). But they all visit the huge Oak Trees that surround my home and they pick the acorns and bomb my house with them. After bombing they are gathered by the squirrels and buried to be eaten later. I know that because every spring I have a thousand baby oak trees in my gardens... So welcome to my Fall Season, I live in a war zone... What is your neighborhood like in the fall? The photo is one I took a few years ago and edited it to look like a watercolor painting.

The temperatures are dropping off. The leaves are just starting to chance. Some of the leaves have already started to fall. The apples are falling from the trees. Even though I love Fall it makes me sad to see summer go. It is what comes after fall that I really don't like.

I know what you mean...since I've had knee surgery I can't ski anymore. Skiing made me happy, now snow makes me cold.

@Happy2BeMe I started skiing by learning while I was in high school. I was lucky when we moved to Canada there was a bunch of new friends who skied all winter...now most of us are too old with bad knees to do it anymore.

Here in the north the colors burst and the heat goes away, we love fall but not so much winter which follows right behind it.

@PainsOnSlate Everyone runs to the mountains to see the color, I hide from it. I hate it. I am not a winter person which is why we moved south, but I guess not south enough.

We do not have a fall season except for maybe acorns. I'm not sure when they drop, I'm still pretty new here in Florida but they do bring out the squirrels.

It feels like a fall morning here today also, and although I welcome the low humidity and temperatures, it was a jolt to the system getting up to this weather this morning. On the farm we had a big old oak tree, and I remember you never ever parked under it at this time of the year. Your picture is beautiful, your area, with the ravines and peaks displays the rich autumn hues so well.

I cheated, the photo was taken down in NY in the Allegany Mountains...it is so lovely there in fall. My back yard is lovely in fall but the trees are only 15 feet away so the view is a bit difference.

I was going to ask about the photo - I wasn't sure if it was a painting or not. The squirrels are a nuisance - we have baby horse chestnuts, thanks to them,

I love the bloom in spring on the horse chestnut trees. Its too bad for north America but Chestnuts don't grown here now. Around 4 billion American chestnut trees were destroyed in the first half of the 20th century because of a blight. I think they are trying to get them to grow again and it would be nice to have local Chestnuts to roast...

love what'cha did with the photo, hon! oh, i'd be a tad grumpy with all that racket day'n/day out. i've gotta 've my peace. 'course the squirrels i'd contend with, coz they're critters 'n feelin' that urgent need to stock 'p fer winter. 'tis quiet here'n the autumn season, jest 's any other fer the most part. i'm certain such's gonna be changin' soon though 'n i long to be able to move further out, 'way from the folks who're swarmin' out here like flies to dung.

My small town is perfect for us, we don't have land or animals but life is good. Except for the noise but it will be gone as soon as the grapes are picked.

What are they? Pretend gunshots to keep the birds from settling in and eating grapes?

Well, it sounds delightful and eventful. Our countryside seems much quieter than yours now that the fields around us are harvested.

Give me nature noises any day that traffic and man-made noises are noise to me.Describing your place, it sounds like the kind of place i`d love to live.

The banging is not natural, its horrible and used to keep the birds off the grapes. I have jumped out of my skin at times when driving in the country and a banger goes off as I drive by. The good part is as soon as the grapes are picked the noise is over...And yes, I live in a small town surrounded by hills and valleys and lovely scenes.
