Last week was the 39th anniversary of the death of the great Elvis Presley, so I began counting down my 25 favorite songs by the King of Rock and Roll. Here's the next song on my list.
#19: Where No One Stands Alone
I've already included one gospel song on the list, because the full picture of Elvis Presley is not complete without his gospel music. He grew up with deep faith, and it never wavered. I've mentioned this before, but at this point it bears repeating: Elvis objected to being called "the king." "There's only one king," he said, "and it's Jesus." Elvis' only Grammy awards in his lifetime were for his gospel performances (his two gospel albums and his live version of "How Great Thou Art" in 1974).
Here he took the great Mosie Lister song, which had been recorded by a blue billion people (I have a live Louvin Brothers album where Charlie introduced the Louvin Brothers' version by saying that there were "several recordings of it" out at the time [1957], and that's a kind understatement). Their version is my favorite (of course), and I love Don Gibson's version, too. But oh, did Elvis do this song so, so well.
There's nothing "Elvis-y" about this rendition. If he could have hidden that most distinctive voice of his you'd never know this was Elvis. Man, oh man, what a stunning rendition of the classic gospel song.

Elvis could really sing. Not just rock and roll Elvis but really sing. He had a voice that could do anything.

Pretty gospel tune. You're right, nothing Elvisy about it.
