#9 in my Remember these 80's Gems? series belongs to the dreamy 1985 hit "Life in a Northern Town" by The Dream Academy. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Nick Laird-Clowes, multi-instrumentalist Kate St. John, and keyboardist Gilbert Gabriel, The Dream Academy formed in London in 1983. Although they weren't a one-hit wonder, the band is best known for "Life in a Northern Town." Co-produced by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmore, "Life in a Northern Town" was an international hit, reaching #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #15 in the UK. It has been covered by country music group Sugarland. This wintery tune pops into my head every so often. It should, I used to play it on the radio. In fact, it might be one of the more memorable songs in this series.

Omg, I HATED this song! Specifically because of the lyrics " The Salvation Army band played/ And the children drunk lemonade". What fool doesn't get beyond third grade knowing that it should be "DRANK lemonade"??? Oh, I'm gettin' the vapors just thinking about it. Must lie down and fan myself. (Clearly the whole 'grammar nazi' thing took root at a young age with me, lol)

I never picked up on that, honestly. Now that you've mentioned it, I'll be able to pick up on it next time.

Yes, but did you like it? I think they are a great band, and this song proves it.

Another 80s gem flashback. I would describe this as a rare "epic" 80s alternative era song.

Alternative that went mainstream. Their second hit was pretty good, too.

It's funny that Gilmore is just as remembered as the song sometimes.
