Day 158
Psalm 137
Psalm 137:1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.
3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
4 How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?
5 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.
7 Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof.
8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewards thee as thou hast served us.
9 Happy shall he be, that takes and dashes thy little ones against the stones.
Have you lived in a place where it was difficult to sing praises to God and show how much you loved and served him? Every time you would open your mouth about God someone would belittle you to the point you became silent and your joy disappeared except for those times when you could get together with other believers and feel the encouragement and love of the people around you and God.
That is how the psalmist felt living in exile, far from Jerusalem, far from everything familiar to him. He found it difficult to sing praises to God or even play instruments to God. He even gave a bit of prophesy regarding Babylon’s destruction, which will be complete during the Tribulation.
Though you might live in the middle of faithless people, there is still an opportunity to give praise to God. You just need to be mindful of those opportunities and take advantage of them as often as possible. Don’t let anyone belittle you for your faith, but stand up for yourself and God and he will give you more opportunities of praise and joy. Pray for those faithless people. They need to know God is real and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. God will give you the words to say and the time to say them.
Let’s pray: Father, help me remain faithful to you in the midst of faithless people. Help me pray for them, and show them you are real. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

I think being a scientist with Christian beliefs makes me a bit of an odd ball in both communities

You have the best of both communities because of your faith in Jesus Christ.
