My daughters hermit crab died already

When we went to an amusement park a few weeks ago I bought both of my kids hermit crabs. My daughter got a really small one it was so cute. Two days later a leg fell off. The next day one of its big pincher claws fell off. The next day my daughter told me when she bathed it that it didn't even come out. I walked by the cage the following day and knew instantly it was dead. She took good care of it I feel terrible for her that it died. My son doesn't do anything with his and its doing fine.

I was wondering that. Before I buy my daughter another hermit crab I have to boil the cage and sponge and everything to make sure if it was sick the next crab won't catch it.

We aren't sure it can happen from mites or from its body getting to dry. I think it was too dry so in my sons cage along with the sponge we put a dish of water as a pet store owner told us to do.

@shaggin it seems there's something called 'post-purchase stress' among hermit crabs

She's 12 and only had it a few days so I think I felt worse for her then she actually felt. She's okay we will get her another one soon.

Sorry to hear that. It's the first time I heard a hermit crab become a pet.

They sell them near the oceans here all the time but you can buy them in pet stores as well.

I am so sorry to fear that. It is always so heartbreaking when a child loses their pet.

She only had it a few days so she wasn't terribly attached to it but I do feel bad for her as she was taking good care of it.

Aw that's a shame. It's like with the carnival goldfish that die so soon. Or the baby turtles we used to get. I don't think they sell baby turtles anymore because of salmonella risk. I am so sorry for your daughter's loss. Is it getting a decent little burial?

Pet stores around here cannot sell turtles until their shells are larger then a quarter to reduce the salmonella risk. I just put it in a big hole that a woodchuck had made that I keep filling in. Then I poured dirt and ashes from the firepit on top. Saved me from digging a hole. Yesterday she asked where its shell was and I told her how I buried it. She wanted to dissect it so she wasn't happy with me. I told her I was sorry but it smelled bad and I had no idea she would want to examine it.

That is why I don't let my children to catch hermit crabs and small fishes in the beach.

We bought these at an amusement park but when it comes down to it the probably would rather be in their natural habitat then in a cage :-(
