HP Pavilion dv5000
Philippines

As lord sidious would say "The time has come" I've been telling her for a couple of years now to save some money for her new laptop because it's sending signals that it will give in soon. This laptop model is HP Pavilion dv5000 Laptop and it's been around when Grandma had it first 20 years ago Then gave it to my brother, finally to me. Glad I bought one two years, thanks to Bubblews, I have save myself from this problem. My only regret is that I didn't get the chance to transfer all the files from her laptop to mine since we only use her organization's USB and it's old too Now, I've search ebay and the least expensive is at least one hundred dollar plus or five thousand to seven thousand pesos in conversation. Unfortunately, it's only two of them available in ebay, and there's a risk that it can be a scam, like a mylotter mentioned in his post before. What matters is getting the files from that old laptop, transfer to me somehow and there won't be any problem buying a new one. In fact, I got an old harddisk i haven't used in a while, hope it still works. Sorry Mom, no skype for the mean time.

I hope you're able to get your files off the laptop and find a new one for a good price.

Now I have to research all over again @just4him but maybe transferring the files from the harddrive to this laptop is a priority one first

maybe you can open a dropbox account so you can save your files there, too.

@Letranknight2015 might become vintage in a few more years or you should at least give it a decent burial in a junk shop

@Letranknight2015 yes my older cpu is like that, there are still important files inside and i also do not know how to recover them that is why it is still sitting here

@louievill I don't know. I could ask the technician if there's any glim of hope but the files are more important.

WoW, that's the oldest laptop I've heard of so far! Keep it around just to look at and remember, lol. That's a piece of your family history right there. Good luck with the search for the new one and transferring the files.

Yes, My eldest brother took pity on me when the first computer my other brother bought gave in back in 2010 I think. We might have it diagnosed to a technician, but i doubt it @CinnamonGrl it has lived way beyond it's date.

The Hp was indeed quality made, which is why my brother was mad at me for buying a Dell Laptop @thelme55

My concern right now is getting the files from the old one and installing a microsoft office in my laptop. that way she can work on mine here instead @122037 I fear getting scammed But I will look at this model you speak of, i mean I'm seriously not looking for new ones right now. I mean the files might be incompatible and I prefer her using linux instead as an OS.

I'm sorry it went up, and I do hope there is a way to get the files off. It really lasted for 20yrs though? That's really good. I got mine in 2012 but ehhhhh, it works like crap sometimes, and I'll eventually be saving up for a new one.

@Letranknight2015 Ah. I think mine is HP, but maybe I've been doing something wrong. I know it overheats a lot and loads slow, so I've been using my sister's laptop for work. I hope you're able to find a new laptop asap.

It seems that HP had better quality of laptops compare to other brands but so far this dell is working fine but a bit slow these past few days. Looks like I'm going to save up for my mom's laptop for real after all @tammys85

My brother will probably be mad for me not saving those files, but all we had was a usb @TiarasOceanView when I wanted to save for a mobile harddrive my other brother was against it.

HP are well made. My hubby had one, until I came into some money. At which point he broke it up so that I would buy him a new one. Yes, really.
