Day 161
Psalm 140
Psalm 140:1 < Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.
4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
6 I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.
7 O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
12 I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.
13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence. (KJV)
Whether you have fought in war, or been involved in problems on the home front, it seems like someone is always ready to pick a fight. People will say and do things to undermine your good intentions and misconstrue everything you say to lay a trap for you.
David was surrounded by those who were ready to kill him on a moment’s notice. His enemies were many. As such, he turned his prayers to God to thwart all the plans and traps of his enemies and let their mischief fall back on their heads. David also gave thanks to God and knew God was his strength and salvation and that he would dwell in God’s presence.
Have you given all your problems over to God? Does he cover you when your enemy, Satan, comes to kill, steal and destroy? Do you know the God of your salvation?
As Christians, we are always suited up for battle against our enemy, Satan. We need to keep our armor on at all times, ready to thwart Satan’s attack, with the power of God’s Word. God goes before us into battle and he will be the one to defeat Satan when he sets his scope on us to destroy everything we hold dear – our children and loved ones. Jesus is our standard bearer as he leads us against Satan. It was his death on the cross that broke our chains, and freed us from Satan’s grip. Jesus’ resurrection sealed the promise of our salvation and brought us back into right standing with God once again.
Satan has no power over us, and everything he plans against us will fail. His demise is our victory, and we will live in God’s presence for eternity. With that knowledge we can give God thanks every day of our lives.
Let’s pray: Father, you are my strength and my salvation. Your Son, Jesus, defeated Satan on the cross and I can turn to you whenever Satan comes against me. Help me to stand against Satan with your Word on my lips and my armor on. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
