We're at the midway point in my Remember these 80's Gems? series. #5 belongs to Junior and his 1982 single "Mama Used to Say."
Junior is from London, a Billboard Best Newcomer Award Winner thanks to his hit "Mama Used to Say." Now recording as Junior Giscombe (his real name,)Junior had been, according to Wikipedia, working extensively with Thin Lizzy leader Phil Lynott, although those works have yet to see the light of day.
"Mama Used to Say" was a pretty big hit in the UK, reaching #7 during a lengthy stay on the British chart. The tune also achieved Top 40 status (#30)on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song has been covered by British vocalist Beverly Knight.
Back when I worked on the college radio station, I did a freeform show three times a week, where I could play whatever I wanted. I used to play "Mama Used to Say" sometimes. Of course I remember.

It did quite well in England. You must have been listening to something else during that time. I missed out on a lot of stuff that way.

@teamfreak16 I used to watch Top of the Pops, so the memory must be going!

I seem to remember that this one broke in the United States before the UK. Our singles chart in then ate spring/early summer of 1982 had some great tracks, including this. He's made some very good records over the years. His nephew, a comedian-turned-singer-now-actor is in one of our top soap operas (if there is such a thing as 'top' where they are concerned. Junior has had sickle cell anaemia for many years.

You did it again. Another one I don't know. I was up to my neck in new wave at that point.

It was always fun to play a little of everything, in any order I wanted. It made for some interesting segues.
