Dealing with an anxious sister.

My sister was scheduled to have a blood extraction yesterday, which she did. This noon, I accompanied her to get the result and then go to the doctor for her check-up. Since yesterday, she was already anxious. I asked her if she manifested some of the sickness that the doctor thought she had, and I found none. Being a nurse, I know some, within my knowledge, that when a symptom or a sign is not manifested, probably, she is not sick of that.
2 PM, we went to the hospital to take the results. I sighed a relief; my sister gave a loud sigh too. Her laboratory results were within normal limits. I assured her that she does not have the disease that her doctor thought she had.
When she showed the results to her doctor (I went with her so her doctor knows I am a nurse- we see each other in the hospital but she did not know her patient is my sister), the doctor reassured my sister that she is not sick anyway, but she said my sister should have further laboratory examination.
When my sister is anxious, I and my son seem to be walking on a tight rope. All actions in the house are measured. The house is also so quiet. I and my son will just stare at each others' eyes when my sister talks loud about the chores at home (but I and my son have our own chores assigned).
How do you deal with an anxious sibling?

I think the best way to deal with an anxious sibling is to stay calm while you are around them. When they can see that you are cool, the coolness and calmness would most likely rub off with them.

that is what i always do. i am the cooler head between the 2 of us. while she gets anxious about practically anything, i always use my common sense to not go against her and her mind too.

@ilocosboy i agree. her being a senior citizen does not justify her over-anxiety; i think she needs attention but she should also think that i am also sick with RHD.

if the lab results were all within normal limits, why did the doctor say your sister needs further lab exams?

@hereandthere indeed, but my sister does not have edema, or has dysuria, no flank pains, and potassium levels are ok, and with these some symptoms, i knew she does not have that illness

@ridingbet Good point. I am so empathetic that I have a hard time with this. I pick up others sadness and emotions and it makes me sick along with them.

@shaggin you should always drift away from others'emotions, don't imbibe it all, leave some to the affected ones

we have to have a relaxing mind and not face off the anxiety of another.

I am not living with any of my sisters but I think my eldest sister tends to be anxious too. Well to me, I just explain to her that it will not help and it is better for her to just relax and pray whenever problems arise and thank God she always listens.

@ridingbet That's good. Anxiousness is not good for the heart.

yes that is true and i agree. i have developed the habit to stay cool because of my heart ailment, but i think my sister gets more anxious if i am quiet and not respond to her when she needs attention from me. i slowly tell her to relax and keep still, and not worry at all.

no, my lady. she is always anxious and she thinks of more complex illnesses that she might have. i always reassure her that she is not showing any sign and symptom with the disease that the doctor thought she has. her talking out loud is her defense mechanism to show that she is scared of any possibilities that she should suffer from

@SIMPLYD no, not paranoia, but over-thinker. she has no personality disorder but because she is a senior citizen now, she dreads the idea of becoming sick with these illnesses that may be foreign to her. that is why i am always here to reassure her and give bits of information about the disease she thought she has

there are times that she is sweet; but more often than not, she is always anxious. she should also be aware that when she is anxious, i get anxious too, and i have a heart ailment

Sometimes when I'm anxious people around me will keep their silence. Because I tend to get irritated and I nag most of the time. I don't like messy house and when I'm anxious I do household chores to keep me away from what I feel but siblings don't want me because I am very sick.

that is also my dilemma with my sister. she has some pains in her joints, and she is hypertensive too, and i constantly tell her not to do hoard chores because she might have an increase BP. she gets cranky sometimes

I know the feeling. We need more understanding and patience as well. That's all we can give them.

the problem too oif my sister is when we tell her to cool down, she answers cynically. like yesterday, i was tired walking and when i responded to her somewhat sarcastic, she asked me "why are you like that?". she should know that i have to have some breaks when i walk long distance.
