I have always enjoyed Gene Wilder movies. I cannot say that they were my favorite movies but I did enjoy them. And I was aware that he was married to a comedian, Gilda Radner that had been in a show that I watched on Saturday night's as a teenager sometimes. I was not a big fan of her's either but did enjoy her.
Then when she had died of cancer, I was touched how his love for her was so touching of how much he would miss her. Years later I heard that he remarried and he had made more movies. One being "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", which I enjoyed a lot and have watched several times. I am not sure what year he made the movie.
Then today my son told me that Gene Wilder had died today. I was surprised and asked him if he knew why? He said that he didn't. So I researched it tonight to see that he passed away from complications from Alzheimers Disease and that he had kept it a secret that he had it. And the article title said that his reasoning for keeping that a secret will make you cry.
He had not gotten to the point of the disease as a lot of people do where he does not recognize the people he is closest too.The title of the article was true. He gathered his family and told them that he wanted to keep it a secret because there were a lot of children that had seen that movie and would see him in public and say,"Look there is Willy Wonka!" and smile. He did not want any child to think that Willy Wonka was sick and anyone to ever lose their smile! That did make me cry. That shows what an incredible man he was, even sick and near his death he thought about other people, even complete strangers.
