Today's Did You Know?: Sleep Disturbance Connected with Fibromyalgia

I have been reading everyone's comments regarding my post about being bored and I think I have found the real problem. That is, the problem is not really boredom... well, it's boredom as a result of a definitive symptom of fibromyalgia - inability to focus. Fibromyalgia patients, sufferers, or as some like to say, fibromites, have an inability to get deep restorative sleep. Even with the help of sleeping aids, restorative sleep evades us. We wake up feeling as tired as we did when we went to sleep. I can sleep for 9 hours and still be tired. One of the results of lack of sleep is an inability to focus. Along with short term memory loss, and the inability to find the right words (basically confusion). Our brains are not restoring themselves at night so they are not at full functioning capacity. This leads to depression as well. If you read my post on boredom and subsequent comments, would you not agree now that my problem is focusing? I have lost interest in things because I can't focus on them as a result of my problems with sleeping which have been pretty bad as of late. I've had issues with sleeping for 20 years since I developed fibromyalgia, some days/weeks/months are worse than others. The last few weeks have been bad for me waking up several times a night. Interrupted sleep makes it impossible to reach deep restorative sleep. So, my boredom stems from a lack of ability to focus due to fatigue and lack of restorative sleep. Snap. Did you know?

@patgalca fibromyalgia is an awful disease to have to contend with. It messes with your mind, body, and soul. The exhaustion definitely will effect your outlook and your focus. I am sorry you are having to deal with this.

I am kind of happy that I came to the conclusion as to why I have become so "bored" and disinterested, that's it's the inability to focus. It makes a lot of sense and kind of makes me feel better. Maybe knowing will help me try to fix the problem.

Thats interesting to know. It could really be a reason why I'm always tired. I'm still not sure what my exact Dx is but since my dad had Fiybro, it's up in the list of problems making me tired. It's just the brain fog with the tiredness that I don't like.

It can really beat you down... especially after 20 years of it. If you don't have muscle pain accompanying your fatigue and subsequent brain fog, you may have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

@patgalca Oh I have brain fog. Bad brain fog. Hence why I hope the rhumatologist can help with my tiredness. It's either Lupus or Fiybro I'm sure. I go more with Lupus since my lymph nodes are swollen.

@polyxena I have the "beginnings of a cold" symptoms all the time basically due to lack of sleep and regeneration. Swollen glands, sore throat, wake up stuffed up. This never goes away (except when I was in Hawaii in the salty ocean air).
