A very long three hours

My aunt has Altzheimers. She's such a dear person to me; she and my uncle took in my mother, little brother, sister and I many years ago when my father was killed in an accident at the pulp mill he had recently started working at. I could write for hours about all the good things my aunt has done in her lifetime. I drove her and my uncle to her appointment with the foot doctor today and I hate to admit that it was the longest three hours of my life. I understand Altzheimers; my mother died from it. I know my aunt can't help the devastating effects of this disease, but to answer the same questions over and over and over.. I don't think she and my uncle will be able to live at home much longer; he already is showing signs of dementia himself. Altzheimers runs in my family; I pray God will take me home before I got to the point my aunt is at. But I trust Him, no matter what the future holds. Sorry to be so down, it's just so sad.

It is a rough disease...it runs in the family. I think my dad might have it honestly...but we are all kind of afraid to admit it to ourselves. The good thing is that if you get it when you are older,,,it usually doesn't progress as fast..depending on the type..He is pretty good...he just repeats things sometimes..stuff he said a few hours earlier.

I'm sorry about your dad. It's a terrible disease for families that have loved ones with it.

@HebrewGreekStudies Amen. What a glorious home we'll have one day. No more diseases, praise God! I'm sure you take good care of your mom, but don't feel guilty when it gets to the point where she needs full-time care in a facility. Not everyone can stay at home to the end. May God bless you and your family.

@1creekgirl no, she's still at home and will be for as long as I can care for her properly...and what you just said, is heartbreaking:(-surely our hope is not in this world, but in the One who created all things.

i didn't know alzheimers could run that strongly within a family. i wish there was a way to prevent it or halt it, like the detection and treatment of some cancers.

Hopefully one day there will be better treatments and even a vaccine.

@LoriAMoore I'm definitely concerned. Is there a definitive test for Altzheimers?

Sorry to hear about that...it must be difficult just watching them go through that disease especially your loved ones.

Thank you. I really dread when the time comes for my aunt to go into a nursing home. My uncle won't allow it, but his mind is not too much better than her's.
