What Does It Mean?

What Does It Mean? I think I already knew this but had forgotten about it. I heard on the news today about the meaning of a flag flying upside down. I remember when some persons flew the American flag upside down in California several years ago. It was to show disrespect, if I remember correctly. But, I heard today that a flag flying upside down is a sign of DISTRESS? Perhaps, it is done on ships at sea, indicating that the ship is in danger or in some kind of distress or some other circumstance. Have you heard that before?

I had heard that before that it meant distress but had not read all the ramifications of that being done.

It is a matter of context. The flag should never be flown upside down except to indicate a situation of dire distress of danger to life or property. Flying it upside down in any other context is indeed an act of disrespect.
