Disrespectful Kid

I love to watch the show Cops. Last night they got a call from a woman who said her 7-year-old son had locked the doors of the house and refused to let her in. When the officers got there, they asked the kid to open the door and the kid said "NO" and made faces at them. After several tries to get the kid to comply, the officer said he would have to break a small pane in the back door to be able to unlock the door and she said okay. Once inside, the kid hid under his bed. The officer literally had to move the bed and pull the kid out. Once in the living room, the kid tried kicking the officers and his mother. The officer asked her if he did this type of thing often and she said he had 'problems'. Ya think?!!!! Sounds to me like he needed a good ass-whippin'; either that or a mental institution. The cop told the woman to give a spare key to a neighbor for the next 'incident'. I don't think I'd feel safe being in the same house with that kid.

And he's only 7 - sheesh! If she's no control over him now, what's he going to be like in a few years?

Wow, sounds like The Bad Seed. Seven is WAY old enough to know better, geez. You know what's weird? I very rarely had to spank my kids, but they didn't act that way. Sometimes you wonder what kind of examples the kid is seeing in the first place.

@nanette64 I've seen parents who let their kids do what they want and later complain they were the best parents and don't know what went wrong. From the beginning I taught mine they were to respect others and they did. I only had to pop mine maybe once on the bum in their entire lives. That woman is in for a world of trouble if she doesn't get help in changing things now.

@noni1959 And it's examples like this that have led to the rise in crime by kids.

I didn't have to spank mine very often either @CinnamonGrl , just the sound of my voice was enough to let her know the poop was about to hit the fan. The kid didn't appear to have ADD, ADHD or Autism, so it sounds like she has let him do whatever he wants to. Now she's paying for it.

That kid is definitely going to be a danger to his mother when he gets to his teenage years, if she doesn't get him some help. It's possible he could be ADD or ADHD, in which meds could help if properly diagnosed. Or, there could be other family dynamics going on that we don't know about, and the poor kid is just acting out for attention.

I'm surprised that when she said he had 'problems' that the officer didn't recommend she get help.

So, since this is a show you watch, is it based on real events or something that could happen? Hopefully the latter although I'm sure it could be either way. A mental institution won't cure the kid of disrespect, but waiting until a child is older isn't the time to begin disciplining them either and many parents don't seem to know that you can discipline in other ways than a whipping. While I'm not against spanking, it works better when the child knows that can be a result of actions taken. Spanking didn't work very well for my mom with my one brother, he would just laugh. I never did ask whether it hurt him or not or why he responded in that manner. I think she continued though for she may not have known another way. He turned out great though, and never locked anyone out of the house. Sounds like that mom needed to find a place to hide her keys where he never saw her get them, or keep a small coin purse on her person at all times with an extra key inside. Was it only a show? When reading this last night I forgot and thought it was on the news.

Cops is a real show @MarshaMusselman . A camera man is in the officers car and films every situation the officers encounter. This takes place in many cities across the country. It's on the channel called Spike and it's on Saturday evenings. Sometimes the whole day will have back to back episodes.

Yeah, with a mother who calls the cops when her 7-year-old locks her out of the house, any kid would probably have problems. Kids don't start acting like that out of the blue, and their environments have a lot to do with the way they behave. I wouldn't doubt that the kid gets plenty of physical punishments already. The mother needs to learn how to respect the kid and work with him, not beat him into submission.

Seven years old and he acts like that. sounds like the kid is in charge of the house. I watched lots of kids like that when I did child care.

Just last year in the Dallas School District, 5400 students were suspended for bad behavior @jstory07 . What the hell is the problem? Parents.

She's definitely letting the kid rule @garymarsh6 . I wonder how thrilled she'll be when she has to start bailing him out of jail.

@nanette64 does he have a problem that is magnified by lack of discipline I wonder. What in the world is this kid going to be like when he becomes a teen? Usually at the age of 7 they are a little in awe of a policeman.

This is what l call letting kids run wild, imagine what he`D be like as a teen. How can a mother not be able to control a 7-year-old? Personally, i`d not have called for foreign help, i`D sit out and wait till they tire of staying in and open, then they`d wish they never even had that idea in the first place and will never close/lock me out again. I will not shout or curse but will find a punishing punishment.

@nanette64 when I was teaching we found that there are more behavior issues than you would believe. It is very hard to control a class when you have a child like this in it. When you have more than one it is awful.

@nanette64 a 7 year old is too young for the mother to think she has to call cops, l think she is too soft on the kid.At school,she/he can only go so far then the teachers will not accept such behaviour
