1957 Bloomsbury Press Gorey’s third published book is a series of rhyming couplets about a mysterious nuisance house guest who disrupts life for a wealthy family. The creature, resembling an otter crossed with a platypus and wearing a scarf, tears up books, renders paintings crooked, sleep-walks and throws ornaments into the garden pond but no one has the heart to stop him. We are told at the close of the story that his antics have lasted seventeen years by the time we read about him, and he remains there to this day. Though alive, the creature behaves like a poltergeist, causing mischief and doing what it likes and no one knows how to stop him or get rid of him. Fun, but a little creepy too. Arthur Chappell

makes you wonder why no one simply tried talking to him, or asking him why, or bribing him or something

@arthurchappell I've lived in places you couldnt throw out whatever the thing there was, pretty sure something was in the basement of that one place. We just burned temple incense upstairs and avoided the room it seemed to be the strongest in

We love Gorey!! My father in law used to collect his books. Surely Tim Burton was influenced by Gorey. I always thought the creature looked like a penguin!

@arthurchappell Oh yes, there are a lot more! There is an all year round Halloween store out here and they carry Gorey books we had not seen previously. His illustrations are great!

Fun and a little creepy. Makes me think of some of Shel Silversteins's stuff.

Sounds like he would fit in with the Addams Family.
