Matthew Schmidt reports the news on Sunday the San Diego Padres have released their infielder Alexei Ramirez. Ramirez who signed a one year, $3 million dollar contract with the Padres before the start of the 2016 as a free agent after the Chicago White Sox decided not to renew his contract at the end of the 2015 baseball season. Ramirez played shortstop for the White Sox from 2008-2015 and the Padres in 2016. His batting average of .240 playing in 128 games for the Padres was not good enough for the team to keep him on the payroll since they are not in contention to make the playoffs this year. Ramirez, 34, will have a hard time trying to find a team that could use his services as a starting shortstop but he could be useful as a reserve infielder for another team before the end of the current Major League Baseball season

You are correct in your assessment Ramirez's future is that of a utility player.
