You had to know this was coming. After all, how can I do a series about cars without including "Cars?" Which brings us to #6 in my Favorite "Car" Songs, which is Gary Numan's 1979 smash electronic new wave single.
Born in London, Gary Numan has been at it since 1977, when he recorded as part of Tubeway Army. The vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist is a highly influential electronic musician.
Numan scored bigtime with his 1979 solo debut, The Pleasure Principle, which spawned the international hit, "Cars." The quirky hit reached #1 in both Canada and the UK, and peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It remains his only US Top 40 hit.
The song's success was no accident. According to Wikipedia, Numan actually set out to write a hit song when he wrote "Cars."
I'd say he succeeded.

The funny thing is, I thought the B-Side was the better song!

@Ronrybs - It's in the middle of The Pleasure Principle, if I remember correctly. Haven't listened in awhile.

@teamfreak16 -- to be fair, this is the more fun song. "Fast Car" is rather dark.

@FourWalls - That it certainly is. It just didn't make the cut. At least I didn't totally space it out like I have done with some of these.

Electronic music really took off in the 80's. So many great bands.

Are Friends Electric was his other big hit. There are quite a few great car songs, ie, Madness - Driving In My Car, though the best has to be Johnny Cash's One Piece At A Time - he was actually presented with a car that matches its description late in his life

This song and accompanying montage tells the story of how an autoworker who assembled luxury cars stole the pieces to make his dream car from the Cadillac fa...

"Are Friends Electric is great. My favorite by him is "Down in the Park."

No, but his career is still going strong. He's still quite popular with the alternative crowd.

You would have gotten demerits had you excluded Gary Numan.
