Hummers in action

United States

Anyone who has ever seen a hummingbird knows they are in constant motion, except for the few seconds they stop to get a 'bite to eat'. Our feeder has become a pit-stop recently. We normally have two resident hummers but the last few weeks we have seen at least 5 at the same time. They (whoever they are) say that if you see 5 it means you have at least 10. It seems every time we are in the pool the action at the feeder picks up. Yesterday I went outside with my camera hoping to catch all 5 of them in a frenzy. Wouldn't you know it, only two were there. I waited and waited for their buds to show, but no luck. They are fun to watch and I wish I had a small part of their energy - maybe I need to start drinking sugar water LOL. Photo is mine.

And a few times we've seen them fly into a door or something and be 'out' for a while, but bounce right back.

@AbbyGreenhill They wouldn't survive very long around here, the walls on our home are made out of brick, and even with all of that sugar water, that would leave them hurting pretty badly.

@Juliaacv Our home is brick - they never hit the house - they fly into glass - windows.

Hummingbirds are fascinating to watch. Some years ago, we had flowers on our front porch that attracted hummingbirds and it was so nice to watch them out the front window.

I have two hanging baskets out front and they go in those flowers then fly right up to the window - like - Hi', I'm here.

I love the hummingbirds. We do have a feeder. Our hummingbirds have not been here in droves like past years. I don't know if our feeder has some local competition or what. We miss them when they're not here..

They must have found another place to stuff their little faces LOL. Ours disappear for a few hours but always some back in the afternoon and hang around until dark, maybe longer.

Very - I stood there about 20 minutes just waiting for a few to arrive, then who knows how long before I got this shot...so many were blurry.

I enjoying watching hummingbirds just fluttering here and there. My mother had a hummingbird feeder outside of her kitchen window years ago. She had so many of them that tended to come back quite often. It was fun to watch how many she would get from day to day. I feel serene when I watch them. My husband has a hummingbird feeder. and we see a few now and them but not like I use to see at my mother's house.

Several years ago, at a different house, we counted over 20 of them one evening. Five or six is all we've seen at this house...but that's enough, we have to refill the food twice a week as it is.

I agree, if I could zoom around like that, I'd get the house done in a fraction of the time
