Odd Cat Behaviour

My little cat, Charlie, has started doing an annoying thing. When I put out his food he grabs a lump of it in his mouth, growls and runs away with it, dropping a trail of cat food all down the hallway. I've had to start remembering to shut the kitchen door when I feed him so he doesn't run off. He used to only do the running away and growling routine when he was given a piece of meat but now he's doing it with canned food as well! I've never had a cat do this before. He clearly thinks he's killing his prey. Perhaps he'll grow out of it. He's only 18 months old. (In the pic he looks like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. He's about 5 weeks old here!)

Perhaps it's an ancient instinct still on his genes before cats were domesticsted by men that resurfaced again. Is he a product of some sort of inbreeding? I mean closely related cats mated together, I'm just guessing

That could be so. He's not an aggressive cat in any way and he doesn't hunt much but seems to enjoy playing at hunting. I don't know much about his breeding. He was a rescue cat so his history is a bit of a mystery.

@5thHouse so it's a mystery, let's leave it at that, so long as it does not harm him or bother you let it remain as such

Evidently he is protecting his food, is he your only pet?

We have another cat who is older than him. Not that she has ever shown any interest in stealing his food, but I think perhaps he thinks he's warning her off.

That is odd. I guess it might be because I don't feed most of my cats wet food... I'd go broke doing that.

Maybe it's their instinct; feeling like other animals are going to grab away their food! My cat does it too!

He does come from a very large litter, so perhaps it comes from there, a need to fight for his food from the start

That does sound odd indeed. My cats tend to not want to eat unless their food is wet. I have tried everything. The canned foods make them have bowel problem so it is back to keeping their food watered down. Does your cat always tend to be under your feet.I think one day I might hurt themI think they maybe trying to protect me.
