Gender Reveal Parties

This past weekend, our niece and her husband hosted a Gender Reveal Party for their baby who is due to join the family in January, 2017. They stood behind a sweetly decorated large box along with both his and her parents. When the lovely box was opened - out popped pink balloons that rose above all those who were taking photos. It was a joyous occasion for all in attendance who chose either a pink or blue clothespin that was attached to their shirts showing their hope for the gender.
When I had children back in the olden days, there were no sonograms to identify the baby as either male or female. The expectant parents were left to wonder until the baby was born. They relied on the old wives tales relayed by family and friends as to the way the mother was carrying, if she had morning sickness, had an aversion to smells or several other ways that identified the sex of the unborn child. In the end, it was a 50-50 chance that they were correct.
Have you ever attended one of these parties, heard of them, or do you think it is just an excuse to have a party? According to etiquette, it is a non-gifting celebration, but several people brought gifts anyway.

I have been to a few of these parties and I think they are a great idea. Most people find out what they are having so it is a way of letting everybody know at the same time what the new addition will be. That is such a great picture. Everybody looks pleased about the new little girl who is now a part of the family.

I think that its a wonderful excuse for a party!
When I was having our children, there were no guesses either, but near the end of my second pregnancy my doctor confided in me that he thought that I was carrying a baby girl.
I told him that I knew that already, and he just looked at me and asked me how-he was flabbergast!
I told him that when I walk into a department store to shop the pink items stand out to me, and I never buy pink for myself, my husband nor our son-so that was how I knew.
I told him that it was blue when I was shopping while I was carrying our son.
He laughed at me and told me that he had never ever heard of anyone who went thru that AND was right!
I hope that I can attend a gender announcement party someday, they sound like fun!

I have never heard of such a thing, it does seem like yet another excuse to get presents. And since I know so much about all the thousands of things that can go wrong between conception and birth I much prefer to wait until the baby has safely arrived before any sort of fanfare.
