Mouse in the House

I have been seeing evidence that the mice have decided to return, and I'm not very happy about their decision. The various traps have been set for two weeks so I thought they might have moved on. But just tonight I heard running in this room and looked over to see a mouse hopping through the closet. Now you can bet where all the traps in the house are. So far it's crafty though, so I don't think this assault sill be enough to do it in.
It's always a shame when they come inside, because I'd rather they just live in peace outside. Instead they come in and I have no choice but to declare war. Hopefully this is a short war... although after I finish my work it might be time to clean out the closet...

They make such a mess in our homes. I just went through a box in my closet. It had empty washed out peanut butter jars that I had covered in duct tape to use as a geocache. The mouse chewed on the tape trying to get inside the container. There was mouse poop and urine in the box.

@OneOfMany You have to leave a bowl of water next to the poison so they will drink it and die. Its pretty inhumane but I can't let them destroy my house anymore.

And that's what they do. They poop and urinate everywhere. When they die in the traps they have a pile behind them. They're just factories for that.

@shaggin That's what worries me with poison, but I think poison makes them look for water and in that case they won't find water in my walls.

@carebear29 I plan to leave traps up for as long as possible. I will have to do a cleaning purge too. For now my place smells like peppermint oil.

@OneOfMany Yes, a lot of books of mine have been destroyed by them.

@MattMeng I hope they weren't vitally important books, like irreplaceable heirlooms.

@Jessicalynnt It is nice. Hopefully the mice get the message and start to stray away from the smell!

There probably is. This morning there were two in the traps, so I can expect more tonight. I super saturated the other rooms with peppermint oil (the potent stuff) to make sure they are concentrated here where the traps are.

A house we lived in previously had a mouse or two. They came in via the crawl space under the house and snuck up the water pipe underneath the kitchen sink. They stayed in the kitchen so were easy to eliminate. Recently, though I happened to see a small critter run under the couch when I was getting ready to leave for work.
I had to take care of it before leaving, so first I moved certain items off the floor, then we shut doors to other rooms and got a cardboard to shoo it out the door. It was a chipmuck. I don't think it was inside very long before I saw it. our screen door doesn't shut on it's own and that's probably how it entered.

Chipmunks are certainly cute enough to try to rescue rather than wipe out. And I'm sure once it was inside it really didn't want to remain there.

@MarshaMusselman It's a good policy. Rodents belong on the outside of the wall! They are tricky things and find themselves in places they shouldn't be.

@OneOfMany I wasn't into killing the rodent, just wanted to get him out of my house.

It's their lack of respect and cleanliness that makes them incompatible. :)

All our windows and doors have screens so mice are usually kept out effectively. There have been times, however, when the screens got holes (because they are old) and a mouse or two got in. I remember waking up one morning to turn and see one on the next pillow. Yikes!
But we were lucky enough to catch them quickly with the traps.
I hope you catch yours soon.

So far I have gotten two, and I haven't heard they running around like last night, so if there are more, they are lying low. Mine get in right along the water pipes and can also get through the heating ducts. Right now I have those areas laced with potent peppermint oil.
