The Reserved/Priority Seat on trains

It's empty. I looked around looking for mortals who may need the seat more than I do... No one seems to care about the empty seat. It's calling out for me... My backs are aching like hell.. my shoulder can no longer support my bag which seems heavy as lead... I have not been feeling too well... Can I? Should I? But no one would know I am feeling unwell... Aiyah!! Just sit!! As i sat down I rose to heaven instantly..realising I NEED the seat.. I will just give it up when someone older or pregnant or handicapped comes along... i paid for normal fare.. but am entitled to Priority priviledges at times too right? What would you do if you saw a shiny tempting empty Priority/Reserved seat on the train?

Hey that's so kind of you. It doesn't work the same way in India because public transportation is always too crowded to even notice the reserved signs .. Love

It is sweet of you to think so much actually, in India no one cares. It is more like first come first served kinda deal... only a handful would get up if they see someone who could need it more.

@ms1864 thanks for your compliment. well, cos all of us will age.. we need to give before we receive... we cannot expect that others give up the seat for us when we need if we don't do it first right?

It would not happen here. Those seats are occupied by youngsters who don´t care for anything but their cellphones. I have to ask them to get up, please. I´m old. If they make any problems, I ashame them by asking sweetly AND loudly to give me the seat

hi @marguicha! am so glad to receive your response! thank you.. well, there are times here in Singapore that some youngsters are too engrossed in their games on their cellphones and may not have noticed people around them whom need the seat more too.. but I see that it has been getting better these days cos there are more people whom give up priority seats so long as they noticed... and I believe if someone asks for it, he/she would probably be given the seat... i sat down just now, but if i see a more senior citizen, i would definitely give up the seat cos i know no matter how aching my back is, that person needs the seat more..

@marguicha over here, usually when someone gives up a seat, the person beside will really wake up and start giving up the seat..

if the train isn't full, and you feel like you might faint any moment, then just sit until you feel stable again. as you said, you will give it up anyway the moment you see someone to whom it's reserved to, or just move sideways if the rest of that seat is not full yet. when these elderly, pregnant or handicapped riders enter an empty train, do you notice if they go to the reserved/priority seats or seat anywhere they prefer?

@hereandthere as the priority seat is just next to the train door and the trains are normally quite full, everyone tend to be standing near the priority seat... just so happens that today only one priority seat is empty and there are still commuters standing in the train..just not the old/pregnant/ needy and i am not sure why i still feel a bit guilty/ashamed that i have to sit down...

Here the priority seats always seem to be occupied by people who do not need them. I don't mind until someone who needs one is left standing.

@Jackalyn seems that it is happening in a lot of places...If I am standing, and I see someone else who needs the seat more than another person do, I will use "eye power" to stare at anyone of them sitting that happens to look up..usually they will give up the seat to the more needy..
