Times They Sure Have Changed

What times am I talking about? Well modern times and what we read about in the newspapers these days. So much unnecessary tragedy and so much violence it certainly scares me. It made me think back to when I went to high school in the 1970s. These were still gentle times in comparison to today and we were warned about watching out for ourselves but also that you could trust your parents, your teachers and of course your friends. Well I remember that I had a very early chemistry lab and I would be walking to school during the fall and wintertime while it was just barely getting light in the sky. My high school wasn’t far from where I lived and our neighborhood Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, New York counted as safe so I always made the trip on foot.
Well one early morning a car pulled up near me and it was one of the Spanish teacher’s at our school. Since he was supposed to be someone I could trust I agreed to let him drive me the rest of the way to school. Now it so happened that I didn’t realize that this particular handsome teacher favored teenage girls. In other words nothing worse than he would imagine himself in love with a certain girl but still unusual and not very pleasant. He brought me to school and I still had some time to wait out in the hallway before chemistry class started. This particular teacher made a bit of small talk with me and then attempted to kiss me. Well I told him to just leave me alone and soon other students were arriving.
I was considering if I should mention this to anyone or not because I knew that I would never take a ride with him again and I was not in his class. As things turned out I did mention the incident to my boyfriend. Well he wasn’t going to keep his mouth shut and he passed the word on to our Vice-Principal. I was interviewed about this and I told them exactly what happened but that it was the one and only time. Can you imagine the gall of this teacher? When he heard they were checking him out he actually came up to me before a class when everyone was already gathering in the classroom and begged me to drop the accusation so that he wouldn’t lose his job. As it turned out this guy had already been accused of the same thing in at least two other high schools and up to now had successfully hidden this fact as he went from high school to high school having lost his previous positions. Thanks to my boyfriend and to me this guy wasn’t going to be teaching anymore.
That’s my story and the point I am making here is that it was then. Things didn’t seem to go violent and people weren’t as aggressive. I think that today people have gotten so much built up inside of them that a case like this could wind up with rape or even murder just so that this guy could keep his job. That is just my opinion. What do you think?
