Upgrading "software"

It is interesting. Not only machines have auto pilot mode. Humans too. I am on auto pilot mode almost every morning.. And sometimes if I am too tired, my CPU or processor hangs for a while... And i just "stone" there staring blankly into space... Maybe its time I upgrade my "software"? Any recommendations? And how do I go about upgrading it? Is it costly?

With Linux, it is always free. Just type "apt get upgrade". I am always on auto pilot before my breakfast.
