What is the function of coloured balls in bamboo plant?

I recently bought a bamboo plant online. In the glass jar they had given water and coloured balls which expand. Are these balls useful for the plant? Is any fertilizer there? I dont know whether to throw the balls out or keep them.

I think they are used to keep the plant hydrated if the water runs out.

They soak up the water and the plant can drink the water from them --- I think it's functional and pretty

Thanks Faye for the comments. I will then keep the coloured balls inside the jar. If it is used as nutrient for the bamboo plant, then it is fine.
